MountainChild exists for the purpose of raising awareness, resources and financial aid for humanitarian work carried out amongst impoverished children living in the Himalayas. Our origins began in 2000 when short-term exploratory teams traveled to the region to investigate reports of severe medical, social, educational, and environmental challenges facing children living in the Himalayas. Children from these areas are counted fortunate if they live to see their early adolescence. Research indicates that over half will die before reaching their eighth birthday, which is most vividly demonstrated by the gripping fact that many parents will not name their children until the child reaches the age of five. Statistics tell us that one out of every five children born in the remote areas of the Himalayas will die before the age of one. MountainChild is urgently working to improve the lives of these children by bringing food, medical aid, education and love to children who have little chance of survival amongst such hostile conditions. MountainChild takes careful steps to ensure that the cultural integrity and rich history of these precious children remains intact.
